In our modern world, what we call self-love is often reduced and minimized to self-care practices. When we think of self-love, we may think of the things we do to feel good — things we do to make ourselves more comfortable. For me, that looks like daily movement, meditation, prioritizing sleep, connecting with nature, and making healthy food choices. Sometimes it’s a relaxing bubble bath, rest days, connecting with friends and family, splurging on a new outfit, or getting a facial. While all of these things are beneficial, I don’t believe they fall under the category of self-love.
Self-love is also self respect and self confidence. It’s extremely complex. It is all about discomfort. We fall more in love with ourselves when we do uncomfortable things with ourselves.
When we choose to walk away from comfortable relationships that no longer serve us, no matter how terrifying and heartbreaking it may be — that is self-love. When we decide to follow a dream that people repeatedly told us we would fail at — that is self-love. When we own up to our actions and take responsibility for our experience, even in the most upsetting of situations — that is self-love.
When we intentionally put ourselves through uncomfortable things because we know it aligns with our higher self and purpose here on earth.. we are giving ourselves a priceless gift — the gift of self-love, that will then radiate out into the world.
Self-care is absolutely wonderful. I hope that we all continue to take great care of ourselves to be healthier and happier. And if you aren’t very established in your self-care routines, it’s never too late to cultivate them. Start simple. That could be drinking a glass of water every morning when you wake up, going for a walk, or listening to a thoughtful podcast instead of watching tv. It looks different for all of us.. and we all need to begin somewhere.
The point I’m really trying to make, is that I encourage you to mindfully do the uncomfortable things. Take the leaps that you’re afraid of. The risk is never greater than the reward.. if the reward is downloading a deep sense of self-love.
